AI License Plate Recognition From Your Phone: No LPR Cameras, No Scanner

License plate recognition (LPR, also called ANPR) means the system reads the car's plate by itself, without the attendant typing it. Until now that required fixed LPR cameras at the entrance. In Parqueadero.app it is done by the camera on the phone or tablet you already use: point it at the car and within a couple of seconds the plate is typed in. The same viewfinder also reads the QR code and the barcode on the ticket to charge the exit.

How does it work?

The attendant taps the camera button, next to the plate field, and points:

  1. One artificial intelligence finds the plate in the image, wherever it is.
  2. Another one reads it character by character. They are two neural networks trained on plates from many countries.
  3. The system does not settle for the first reading. It waits until several frames in a row say the same thing. A glare or a blurry frame rarely repeats the same mistake.
  4. It opens the check-in with the plate already typed, or the payment if the car was already inside. The plate shows up in yellow with a green check mark, and the attendant confirms with the usual button.

What does not change: it never checks a car in or charges on its own. If the plate came out wrong, the attendant fixes it before confirming.

What does the viewfinder read?

One viewfinder for all three, no switching modes:

Point it at…What it does
The car plateIf the car is not inside, it opens the check-in with the plate typed. If it is, it opens its payment
The ticket's QR codeOpens that car's payment
The ticket's barcodeOpens that car's payment

At the top it says "Scan ticket or plate", and at the bottom there is a "Type the plate" button for when typing is easier.

How accurate is the reading?

We did not want to promise a number without measuring it. We took public photos of plates from 14 Latin American countries (Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Panama, Costa Rica and Guatemala) and ran them through the same reader the app uses:

Result
Current plates71 of 76 (93 %)
Old or special plates (diplomatic, government)5 of 7

These are photos from the internet, with plates at an angle, far away, dirty or at night. At a parking lot entrance, with the car facing you a couple of meters away, it is easier. Even so, the attendant always confirms. And when it does not recognize the plate, typing it by hand is still there, as always.

Do I need an LPR camera?

No. The difference from a fixed license plate reader camera:

Fixed LPR cameraParqueadero.app
What you buyThe camera, its installation and sometimes a computer to processNothing: the phone or tablet you already have
Where it readsOnly in the lane where it was installedWherever the attendant is: entrance, exit, out in the lot
Reads the ticketNoYes, the QR code and the barcode
If power or internet goes outDepends on the equipmentKeeps reading with the model stored on the phone
Who decides the check-inThe camera, or a gateThe attendant, with the plate already typed

Fixed cameras have their place: a large lot with an automatic gate and nobody in the booth. For one with an attendant who already checks every car in on a phone, the missing camera is already in his hand.

Does it work without internet?

Yes, and it was the hardest part to build.

  • With internet, the plate is read by a server. It is the fastest option and uses nothing on the phone.
  • The phone also keeps its own artificial intelligence model. It gets ready by itself, quietly, over wifi, the first time the attendant uses the camera. It is not downloaded again with every update.
  • If the connection drops, or the server does not answer, the viewfinder keeps reading with the phone's model without anyone doing anything.

At the bottom of the viewfinder, a small circle tells you whether that phone can already read offline: green with a check mark, ready; red with an X, not yet. In the Android app the model comes built in: it reads offline from day one.

Everything else in the system also works offline: check-ins, payments and the shift close.

What about the exit with the ticket?

The viewfinder reads the entry ticket, either the QR code or the barcode, and opens that car's payment. That removes the step of typing the plate at the exit.

And it powers the control that protects the most money: the exit only with the customer's ticket, which stops an attendant from closing out a car early and keeping the difference. The phone's camera works as the scanner: you do not need to buy a barcode gun to turn it on.

Which phones does it work on?

On very old phones, without the power for artificial intelligence, the server does the reading and the phone only sends the photo.

It comes included, like the rest of the system: check-ins, exits, rates, shifts, reports and monthly passes.

Frequently asked questions

How does license plate recognition with a phone work? The attendant opens the camera inside the system and points it at the car. One artificial intelligence finds the plate in the image and another reads it character by character. When several frames in a row return the same plate, the system takes it and opens the check-in or the payment with the plate already typed. The attendant just confirms.

How accurate is the license plate recognition? We measured it with public photos of plates from 14 Latin American countries: it got 71 of 76 current plates right, 93 %. That is why it never records anything on its own: the plate it read shows up on screen and the attendant confirms with the usual button. If it does not recognize it, the plate is typed by hand, as today.

Do I need to buy an LPR camera to recognize plates in my parking lot? No. LPR or ANPR cameras are fixed, installed at the entrance and paid for separately. Here the camera is the one on the phone or tablet the attendant already uses to check cars in.

Does it work without internet? Yes. With internet the plate is read by a server, which is the fastest option. The phone also keeps its own artificial intelligence model, which gets ready by itself over wifi. If the connection drops, it keeps reading with that one. The viewfinder shows a green circle when the phone can already read offline.

Can I charge the exit by scanning the ticket with the phone? Yes. The same viewfinder reads the QR code and the barcode on the entry ticket and opens that car's payment screen. You do not need to buy a barcode scanner: the phone's camera does the job, including for the ticket-required exit.

Does it work in the Android app and on iPhone? Yes. In the Parqueadero.app Android app and in the browser of any phone or tablet, Android or iPhone. In the Android app the model comes built in, so it reads plates offline from day one.

In short

Recognizing plates no longer requires fixed cameras. The attendant's phone finds and reads the plate with artificial intelligence, opens the check-in or the payment with the plate typed, and the attendant just confirms. The same viewfinder reads the QR code and the barcode on the ticket for the exit. It got 93 % of current plates right in photos from 14 countries, and it keeps reading without internet.

If you want to see what checking a car in without touching the keyboard feels like, Parqueadero.app already has it.
